VFN Fiberglass Heads-up street shootout June 4th 2005
June 4th marked off the second race on the VFN Fiberglass schedule for 2005. Good weather and lot’s of cars once again made it a huge success. Wabash Valley Dragway set the scene for the hottest action in the mid-west. Thanks to the efforts of the track crew there, new records were set and new winners were revealed. With track temps of over 140 degrees, all of the racers still got down the track safely.
Promax carbs-Fun Street lived up to it’s name with its appeal drawing out some new cars for the class. It was Brian Wilson on top of the index this race with a dead on 6.50 for the #1 spot in qualifying. Chuck Burkhart was right behind him with a stout 6.55. Bill Frye, Chuck Ulrich, and John Doswell rounded out the top five. New cars included the Challenger of Chad Marshall, the Chevelle of Aaron Gerling, and former street car champ Dewey Bastin’s ‘68 Camaro. There were the other usual suspects in the class as well, with anyone of them having the ability to take the win. Round one brought some close action. Burkhart just edged Yeisley with a 6.78 to a 6.79. Frye got Gerling with a 6.65, Bastin rolled out with a 6.64, and Ulrich got into the 50’s with a 6.57. Second round placed new comer Bastin up against class contender Bill Frey. Frye had his work cut out for him when Bastin laid down a perfect 6.50. Ulrich red lit against Wilson handing him the win. The semi finals gave Wilson the odd car bye. Last months winner, John Doswell, and Dewey Bastin met for a shot at the finals. Doswell had just won the round before with a tremendous hole shot. Bastin would have to really muster up some of his championship winning skills to beat him. When the smoke cleared it was the Camaro of Bastin barely edging another great reaction time by Doswell. With Wilson and Bastin in the finals it could be any ones game. The cars left the line hard with the wheels in the air. At the stripe it was Dewey Bastin out front with a class winning 6.57. Bastin is a long time heads up racer. He’s a former OSCA champion and had just finished the car at 2 am on Saturday morning for a 6 pm Saturday evening win. Nice job Dewey.
M&M Engines-True Street was as wild as ever. Last months champ Kevin Neal once again showed he has what it takes by qualifying number 1 with an impressive 5.59. New to the VFN race was Marc Alexander and his number 2 spot 5.78. VFN regular Brett Heidgerken ran some personal best times at Wabash and qualified well with a 5.94. We had another new face with the Mustang of Gary Davis. Unfortunately he had an ignition box failure and could not qualify. Jumping to the semi finals, we saw some wounded warriors. Heidgerken ripped out his gears and Rueckerts blown Cutlass hurt some parts. This left Neal and Alexander to battle it out in the finals. The Camaro / Mustang shootout was a close one. Neal’s Mustang hit the tree hard and barely held on with a 5.57 over the Camaro’s 5.55. Alexander went 5.52 in the semi’s just missing the et record, but giving him the mph record of nearly 130. Jason Rueckert still holds the ET record with his Procharged, big block Cutlass.
Harland Sharp-Phreak Street put on the big show of the day. Steve Keen shook all of Terre Haute with his blown alcohol monster ‘55 Chevy. Steve laid down the record pass for the #1 spot with a 4.82 at 147 mph. #2 slot was Randy Brown who won last months event. Randy blasted a 5.07 and was followed by Matt Madsen’s 5.22. Outlaw Super Stock racer Duane Waldrop took the #4 spot with a 5.27. Top 5 guy was new comer Jeff Bartlett and his wild alcohol injected Corvette. Round one gave Keen a bye. Bartlett spit a piston out of the exhaust giving Waldrop the win. Brown beat Rob Keller with a 5.06 to a 5.82. New face Brian David rode a big wheelie to a 5.83 loosing to Madsen’s 5.30. Round two gave Waldrop a bye as Keen hurt the converter. Brown had transbrake trouble giving the win to Madsen. Final round gave Madsen a long awaited win against Waldrop. Unfortunately Waldrop had a broken rocker shaft and couldn’t give Madsen a run. Matt was quoted as saying “I hated to win the way I did, Randy broke his transbrake button and caused him to red-light. Crusher (Waldrop) broke a rocker stand in the first round and got it to the finals. Really wish it would have been a heads-up race”
The fans are really going wild for the event. There are high quality DVD’s of each race available for $13. E-mail Dennis at badpurple66bu@yahoo.com or go to www.streetshootout.com for your copy today. Without sponsors like VFN Fiberglass, Harland Sharp, M&M Engines, Promax Carbs, and CFM cylinder heads this type of racing would not be possible. Next race is July 9th. Hope to see you there!
